State Department receives Perinatal Grant: The Virginia State Health department is one of five recipients of a Perinatal Depression grant of $250,000. The state plans to use the money to create an online training tool for providers. As the Virginia Coordinator for Postpartum Support International, I am serving on the advisory panel regarding implementation of this grant. I would like to see the creation of a state-wide database of providers, which I think may be a natural outcome of this training tool. In addition I hope to encourage the State to create a hotline staffed with volunteers throughout the State as I do not wish to continue indefinitely as the one-person State hotline. Support Groups in Northern Virginia: A new organization, the Women and Children's Wellness Foundation (WCWF) has been formed by Dr. Wendy Hookman to continue to provide peer support groups for women with postpartum mood disorders. Their website with contact information is: www.ppdpals.com WCWF plans to have free peer support groups in Washington, D.C. and Maryland by early 2005.
